EPTIME // Dispositivo indossabile per supervisori di soggetti che soffrono di Epilessia

EPTIME is a wristband aimed at helping the supervisors of subjects suffering from epilepsy to manage the seizures by monitoring and communicating information like their duration, seriousness and the need of administering drugs. The device is particularly suitable for the parents or caregivers of epileptic children. The bracelet is composed of a hypoallergenic wristband and a case containing the electronic components. When the seizure starts, the caregiver can activate the bracelet just by pressing it. Information about the duration of the seizures is delivered through the surface of the device, because the color and the area of the enlightened part of the bracelet change as time passes. When the critical duration of the crisis is reached (typically about 5 minutes, according to the suggestions of the clinicians), the surface of the device turns red, the light starts pulsating and the bracelet starts vibrating to warn the caregiver to administer the drugs to the patient. The caregiver can record the end of the seizure by pressing the wristband for a second time. After the recording, the device gives a feedback to communicate how serious the seizure was (using different colors according to its duration). All the information recorded by EPTIME is sent to a digital online diary embedded in a mobile application, which registers the details about the crisis, its geo-localization, the drug administration and the timing of the events.

Marco Ronca & Sara Colombo

Sara Colombo is an interaction design researcher focused on user experience and design-driven innovation. Her research interests concern tangible interactions, emotional design and how design can enhance users’ interactions with technological products by appealing to sensory and emotional experience. She earned her PhD in Design in 2014 and was Adjunct Professor in Interaction Design and Design&Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, before joining the MIT Design Lab as Postdoctoral Associate and Senior Project Lead. She has published journal articles, papers and a book on the topic of dynamic products and tangible interactions and co-chaired international conferences in the field of interaction design.

Marco Ronca lives in Como and works as a Virtualization 3D artist at Hugo Boss Ticino. His primary task is related to product development activities. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering bachelor degree and he earned his master degree in Design & Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano. The thesis he presented regarded Interaction design issues.
